2019 ASHRAE Winter Conference Student Program

A special program for students will take place at the 2019 Winter Conference. Events and activities include a mixer, technical talks, a design competition session, student congress and a tour. Students are also encouraged to attend recommended technical sessions throughout the conference.

Student Program

An orientation will take place via webinar on Tuesday January 8, 2019 at 5pm EDT.



Saturday, January 12 | 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Prior to the ASHRAE Student Program starting, come join representatives from Oak Ridge National Laboratory & National Renewable Energy Laboratory to hear about JUMP into STEM. Pizza and sodas will be provided. 

This is a new STEM online crowdsourcing platform that poses technical challenges for innovative and energy saving building technology solutions. Students (undergraduate and graduate) with the best online submissions will compete in a final event for up to 6 paid 10-week Summer 2019 internships at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Students must meet eligibility requirements for the Building Technologies Minority Serving Institutions Program (BTMSIP) or the Higher Education Research Experience (HERE) program.

Team submissions are encouraged. Two challenges are open until November 30, 2018, and one challenge is open until February 8, 2019. The challenges are focused on: how to influence homeowner decisions to optimize their energy use; new methods to identify fault detection and diagnosis in buildings; and product solutions for retrofitting residential building wall systems.

Dr. Christine Darden


Christine Mann Darden (D. Sc. 1983) is an internationally recognized authority in the field of sonic-boom minimization.  In her roles as researcher and leader, she contributed a computer-based tool for the definition of the equivalent area of a minimum-boom aircraft for given flight conditions.  She then, with a partner, validated this process through designing models to the equivalent area and testing them in wind tunnels.  Darden also led a national group of sonic boom experts in a process to broaden the approach to minimization that included not only design, but also operation, signal propagation and human acceptance.  As research broadened, Darden led a national steering team and the local design and operation element of the program.

A native of Monroe, NC, Darden has degrees from Hampton Institute (B.S.) (now University), in Hampton, VA, Virginia State College (M.S.) (now University) in Petersburg Virginia, and George Washington University (D. Sc.) in Washington, D. She began her 40-year career at the NASA Langley Research Center in 1967 as a Data Analyst and was reassigned to the position of Aerospace Engineer in 1973, where she began her work in sonic boom minimization.   In 2002, a test flight of a modified F-5 Sonic Boom Demonstrator validated the equivalent-area approach to sonic boom minimization on which she had worked.

Darden became a member of the Senior Executive Service at NASA in 1999 when she was named Director of the Aero Performing Center Program Management Office.  She also served as the Assistant Director of Langley for Strategic Planning and finally as the Director of Strategic Communications and Education before retiring in 2007.

Plenary Session

The Plenary will feature a keynote from Grant Imahara who was one of the hosts of Discovery Channel's Mythbusters for almost a decade. The Plenary Session also features presentations from the Honors and Awards programs, including the First Place winners of the Student Design Competition.

YEA/Student Mixer

Saturday, January 12 | 5:00 – 6:30 pm

Mix and mingle with Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) and Technical Committee members. Meet new friends, win prizes in our group poker run activity, and enjoy free food and drinks.

Student Program

Sunday, January 13 | 8:00 am – 1:30 pm

The program will feature a discussion on ASHRAE's Design Competition, technical talks, a group design build challenge, plus roundtable discussions over lunch.

Student Congress (by invitation only)

Student branch officers are selected to participate in this two-hour session to provide ASHRAE leaders with feedback and guidance on student activities.
