WASHINGTON, D.C.—ASHRAE’s work in providing energy guidance was highlighted by ASHRAE President Kent Peterson, P.E., in Congressional testimony and in a series of media interviews with the D.C. press corps.
Peterson spoke May 14 at a hearing, Building Green, Saving Green: Constructing Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Buildings, before the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Also speaking were Ed Norton, actor and trustee of Enterprise Community Partners; and Gavin Newsom, mayor of San Francisco. Photos and more information are available at http://globalwarming.house.gov.

“As Congress examines all sources and causes of global warming emissions, it must consider how the buildings we work and live in can contribute to reduce the impact of climate change,” said Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., chair of the committee. “ASHRAE’s standards offer a foundation for energy-efficient buildings, and the committee is interested in how building codes can be used to increase the number of green buildings throughout the nation.”

Peterson discussed ASHRAE’s role in writing standards for adoption into building codes and its work in developing guidance that goes beyond minimum requirements in building codes.

While in Washington, D.C., Peterson also conducted a media tour. He met with general and trade media reporters from outlets such as The Washington Post, Roll Call, Environment and Energy Daily, ClimateWire, and Environmental Science and Technology. Peterson also held a briefing on net-zero-energy buildings at the National Press Club. An interview with E&ETV is available at www.eenews.net.
