ASHRAE is an advisor to persons appointed to represent the United States in the development of international HVAC&R and solar energy standards. In this activity, ASHRAE is formally delegated as Administrator by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to oversee the three U.S. Technical Advisory Committees (TAGs) shown below and their Panels. (Each TAG and TAG Panel bear the designation number and title of a corresponding International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) or Subcommittee responsible for development and maintenance of international standards.)

U.S. TAG for ISO/TC 86 - Refrigeration and air-conditioning*

Panel 1 - Safety of refrigeration systems*
Panel 2 - Terms and definitions*
Panel 3 - Testing and rating of factory-made refrigeration systems
Panel 4 - Testing and rating of refrigerant compressors
Panel 5 - Testing and rating of household refrigeration appliances
Panel 6 - Testing and rating of air-conditioners and heat pumps
Panel 7 - Testing and rating of commercial refrigerated display cabinets
Panel 8 - Refrigerants and refrigeration lubricants*

U.S. TAG for ISO/TC 180 - Solar Energy

Panel 1 - Climate - Measurement and Data
Panel 4 - Systems - Thermal Performance, Reliability & Durability*
Panel 5 - Collectors and other Components

U.S. TAG for ISO/TC 205 - Building Environment Design*

Panel 1 - Indoor Environment Design*
Panel 2 - Design of Energy-efficient Buildings*
Panel 3 - Building Control Systems Design*

* - Designates two ISO/TCs and seven Subcommittees for which the international secretariat is held by ANSI and delegated to ASHRAE. Effective January 1, 1996, the ANSI-held secretariat for ISO/TC 86/SC 6 was delegated to ARI on recommendation of ASHRAE. At the 18 April 1997 meeting of ISO/TC 86 in London, the U.S. was assigned Secretariat responsibility for ISO/TC 86/SC 3 under a revised title and scope. ARI has offered to undertake this assignment for ANSI.

ISO/TC SCOPES

ISO/TC 86 - Refrigeration and air-conditioning: The development of International Standards in the fields of refrigeration and air-conditioning, including terminology, mechanical safety, methods of testing and rating equipment, measurement of sound levels, refrigerant and refrigeration lubricant chemistry, with consideration given to environmental protection. The scope includes factory-assembled air-conditioners (cooling), heat pumps, dehumidifiers, refrigerants, and refrigerant reclaiming and recycling equipment as well as other devices, components and equipment such as humidifiers, ventilation equipment and automatic controls used in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems not covered by other ISO Technical Committees.

ISO/TC 180 - Solar Energy: Standardization in the field of solar energy utilization in space and water heating, cooling, industrial process heating and air conditioning.

ISO/TC 205 - Building Environment Design: Standardization in the design of new buildings and retrofit of existing buildings for acceptable indoor environment, and practicable energy conservation and efficiency. Indoor environment includes air quality and thermal, acoustic & visual factors. Excluded: Other ergonomic factors: methods of measurement of air pollutants and of thermal, acoustic and lighting properties and methods of testing for performance and rating of building environmental equipment and thermal insulation.
