2006 Honors and Awards2006 Honors and AwardsQUEBEC CITY - The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recognized 69 people and one chapter for contributions to ASHRAE and the HVAC&R industry at the Society's 2006 Annual Meeting being held here June 24-28.

The Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award honors an ASHRAE Fellow for continuous preeminence in engineering or research work. The recipient is Max H. Sherman, Ph.D., Fellow ASHRAE, group leader of the Energy Performance of Buildings Group, Indoor Environment Department, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Environmental Energy Technologies Division in Berkeley, Calif.

The Exceptional Service Award recognizes Distinguished Award recipients who have continued to serve the Society faithfully and with exemplary effort. Eight recipients were recognized:

The Distinguished Service Award salutes members of any grade for giving freely of their time and talent to the Society. The following 22 members were selected:

The Distinguished 50-Year Member Award is given to persons who have been a member of the Society for 50 years and have performed outstanding service to the Society. The following 14 members are receiving this award:

The Journal Paper Award honors the best paper or article published in ASHRAE Journal. Dennis Stanke is the recipient for writing Single-Path Multiple-Zone System Design, published in January 2005. Stanke is staff applications engineer, Trane Co., La Crosse, Wis.

The Crosby Field Award honors the best paper presented at an ASHRAE meeting. Sang-Min Lee, Ph.D., and Jin-Won Lee, receive the award for their paper, A New Local Ventilation System Using a Vortex Flow Generated with a Finned Rotating Annular Disk. They also receive an ASHRAE Poster Presentation Award.

Sang-Min Lee works at and Jin-Won Lee is a professor, Division of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Pohang, South Korea.

The following papers were selected to receive ASHRAE Best Paper Awards, which recognize the authors of the best technical and symposium papers presented at Society meetings.

  • Charles S. Barnaby, Jeffrey D. Spitler, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASHRAE, and Dongyi Xiao, receive an ASHRAE Technical Paper Award for The Residential Heat Balance Method for Heating and Cooling Load Calculations (RP-1199). Barnaby and Spitler also receive an ASHRAE Technical Paper Award for Development of the Residential Load Factor Method for Heating and Cooling Load Calculations (RP-1199) Barnaby is vice president of research, Wrightsoft Corp., Lexington, Mass.; Spitler is C.M. Leonard Professor and Xiao is a graduate student, School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla.
  • Didier J. Thevenard, Ph.D., P.Eng., and Robert G. Humphries, Ph.D., receive an ASHRAE Technical Paper Award for The Calculation of Climatic Design Conditions in the 2005 ASHRAE Handbook (RP-1273). Thevenard is project leader, renewable energy research, British Columbia Institute of Technology, Burnaby, British Columbia; Humphries is manager, Air Quality Modeling and Assessment Group, Environment and Energy Division, Levelton Consultants, Richmond, British Columbia.
  • David A. Springer, Leo I. Rainer and Willard L. Dakin, P.E., receive an ASHRAE Symposium Paper Award for Development and Testing of an Integrated Residential Night Ventilation Cooling System. Springer is president and Rainer and Dakin are senior engineers, Davis Energy Group, Davis, Calif.
 

The ASHRAE Poster Presentation Award is given to peer-reviewed technical papers with the best visual and technical information presented at Society meetings.

The recipients are Wei Shang, Ph.D., and Robert W. Besant, P.Eng., Fellow ASHRAE, for Determining Flow Channel Size Variations Using a Pressure Probe for a Typical Regenerative Wheel. Shang is with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Saskatchewan, Canada. Besant serves as professor emeritus of the department.

The Homer Addams Award is presented to a graduate student involved in outstanding HVAC&R research. The recipient is Pankaj Hande, graduate research assistant, Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Missouri-Rolla, and co-op research assistant, Emerson Climate Technologies, Flow Control Division, St. Louis.

The Lincoln Bouillon Award recognizes a member who performs the most outstanding work in increasing the membership of the Society during the course of the year. The recipient is Holly Robinson Townes, P.E., senior project manager, Keithly Barber Associates, Burien, Wash.

The William J. Collins Jr. Research Promotion Award is given to the chapter research promotion chair who raises the most money for ASHRAE research. The recipient is Rick L. Sellers, P.E., principal, Pettit and Pettit Consulting Engineers, Little Rock, Ark.

The ASHRAE Student Activities Achievement Award recognizes a Chapter Student Activities chair for service related to the goals and growth of student activities at all levels. The recipient is Carl McGartlin, sales engineer, Spirax Sarco, Charleston, S.C.

The Dan Mills Technical Award recognizes a Chapter Technology Transfer Committee (CTTC) chair who excels in meeting CTTC goals in technical, energy and government activities. The recipient is Wei Sun. P.E., senior mechanical engineer, Cummins and Barnard, Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Chapter Program Star Award recognizes excellence in chapter program endeavors. The recipient is David R. Shugars, consulting sales engineer and director of operations, R.L. Deppmann Co., Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Government Activities Award recognizes an ASHRAE chapter for outstanding effort and achievement in state, provincial and local government activities in connection with technical issues related to the activities of the Society. The recipient is the Detroit Chapter.

The Lou Flagg Historical Award recognizes a chapter Gold Ribbon award winner for compiling information on outstanding historical projects or persons related to HVAC&R. The recipient is Michael S. Meteyer, lead engineer-mechanical, Marshall Erdman and Associates, Madison, Wis.

The Refrigeration Comfort Cooling Award for Project Excellence recognizes innovation and/or new technologies. The recipients are Mark Blazis, P.E., Kevin Dolder and Karl F. Miller, P.E. Blazis and Miller are vice presidents, and Dolder is a mechanical engineer, Henneman Engineering, Chicago.

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is an international organization of 55,000 persons. Its sole objective is to advance through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.
