LEED® Loses Money for USGBC; Greenbuild Big Moneymaker
WASHINGTON—The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) loses money on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification program, according to a recent news article. In 2006, the nonprofit USGBC spent $5.3 million running LEED, but federal tax statements show LEED certifications brought in only $1.35 million. However, USGBC's shortfall on LEED is more than offset with revenue from programs that developed around the certification program. USGBC's biggest revenue producer is its annual Greenbuild International Conference and Expo. The event generated $9.7 million in revenue in 2006 and is growing, said Jerry Yudelson, chairman of the Greenbuild organizing committee.

First U.S. Auction of CO2 Allowances Raises $38.5 Million
NEW YORK—The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) recently conducted the first auction of carbon dioxide emission allowances in the U.S. More than $38.5 million was raised from the sale of 12.5 million allowances to bidders from the energy, financial, and environmental sectors. Demand for the allowances exceeded the available amount by more than four times. Six of the 10 East Coast states that comprise the RGGI offered allowances for sale in the auction.

Thieves Stealing and Selling Solar Panels
DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif.—Police departments in California—the biggest U.S. market for solar power—are reporting a rash of burglaries of solar panels. Authorities believe that many panels are being resold to unwitting homeowners, sometimes via the Internet. In one case, a Santa Monica resident was arrested for attempting to sell stolen solar panels for $100 apiece on the eBay auction site. His lawyer said the man bought the panels—not knowing they were stolen—from another seller on Craigslist.

Microsoft’s 'Greenest' Data Center Goes Online
SAN ANTONIO—Microsoft has opened a $550 million, 477,000 ft2 (44 000 m2) data center in San Antonio. The new data center uses several strategies to make it more manageable, scalable, and energy efficient. Sensors track information including temperature, CPU use, and humidity and report back to Microsoft's proprietary data center management tool. The facility also receives a large supply of nuclear and wind energy and recycles water. "The San Antonio facility is the most power-efficient data center we've ever built," said Mike Manos, Microsoft's general manager of data center services.

Ventilation Heat Recovery for Laboratories

By Otto VanGeet, P.E., and Sue Reilly, P.E.
According to the authors, laboratories typically require 100% outside air at high ventilation rates primarily for safety reasons. The heating and cooling energy needed to condition this air, as well as the fan energy needed to move it, often is five times greater than the amount of energy used in most offices for these same purposes. The article focuses on one approach: air-to-air energy recovery using enthalpy wheels, heat pipes, or runaround loops in new construction.
